Their names made headlines

This man became a legend.
Roger Bannister, who in 1953 was studying to be a doctor, was a British Olympic runner destined for a place in history. That same year he set up a new AAA Championship record for the mile event of 4 minutes 5.2 seconds, covering the last lap in just 52 seconds.
But it was the fllowing year that Bannister claimed international fame when, on May 6 he became the first man to run the mile in less than 4 minutes (3:59.4). Laterthat year Bannister retired from running to continue his medical studies, later becoming a neurologist.
When he was asked to explain that first four-minute mile he answered : "It's the ability to take more out of yourself than you've got.'"


Two faces with one common link...Mount Everest.
Announced to co-incide with the Coronation the ascent of the world's highest mountain was a major achievement. The first men to do it were Edmund (later Sir Edmund) Hillary and Sherpa Tensing. The expedition was led by Col Sir John Hunt.
